Words of Wisdom from the EAST
March 2008
Brethren,

To some people, changes bring on a great sense of fear while
others eagerly accept it. I speak of change in this month’s message
because not all of you are aware of the changes in how a candidate is
introduced to Freemasonry, the paperwork now involved, and the
mentoring that fosters the candidates knowledge through the various
stages of degrees. Yes, these new changes are different to what we have
become accustomed to, but change is good, right? I am sure that the ritual
work we strive to perfect today is not exactly what was practiced when the
fore fathers of our country were sitting in Lodge. I believe subtle changes
have taken place over the years. An example would be the books given to
our EA’s for exams. There was a time when everything was oral. Can you
imagine the thoughts of the membership when they found out the newly
initiated brethren were given books to cipher from?
It is inevitable that changes will be made. How we develop and
communicate these changes is what will make the difference in how they
are accepted. I believe Freemasonry has evolved through the times just as
society has. Although the basic foundation and beliefs of Freemasonry
have not changed, the way new brothers and potential candidates view
Freemasonry has changed. When I was elected to membership, the
mentoring program did not exist and I did not know what to expect.
Because of the technology of the internet, the candidates that enter the
Lodge today are more informed than I was when I entered. There is a lot
of information out in public view now. It is up to us as Freemasons to
educate and clarify what is expected of our newly elected men. I feel as if
it is better for us to mentor these men, not just sign their petition and wait.
Knowing that the knowledge of a mentor is just a phone call away is a
good thing. A mentor is a friend or guide for these men. Think back to
the time when you received your letter noting that you had been accepted.
Remember all the questions you had? I do. With the help of mentors,
these questions can now be answered. If you have any questions on the
new petitions, please stop out on the third Wednesday of the month or
give me a call. I look forward to the opportunity of speaking with you.

Warmest Fraternal Regards,
